Education

Mr. Obrand received a Wheeler Scholarship to attend the University of California at Berkeley. He received his B.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

He attended law school at the University of California Hastings College of the Law where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1973. At Hastings, Mr. Obrand was an editorial associate of the Hastings Law Journal and a member of the Thurston Honor Society.

Professional Experience

Mr. Obrand has substantial experience in general business, real estate, employment and criminal litigation, including a successful record as a trial lawyer. He has litigated hundreds of cases to a conclusion in trial courts in California and Colorado. In real estate cases, he has represented individual buyers and sellers as well as major real estate brokers such as Coldwell Banker in cases of fraud, non-disclosure, specific performance and breach of contract. He has also mediated numerous real estate and business cases.

Mr. Obrand has also litigated complex land use cases which involved zoning and a legal challenge to the approval of application for an exception to a height restriction of a specific plan.

Mr. Obrand began his legal career as a trial attorney in the Contra Costa County Public Defender's Office where he tried several misdemeanor and felony cases to a jury.

After several years in private practice, Mr. Obrand became general counsel for Coldwell Banker's residential brokerage company in Southern California. In that capacity, he litigated cases with significant exposure filed against Coldwell Banker which generally involved issues of fraud, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, and negligence. In addition to his litigation duties, Mr. Obrand supervised the legal department for Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Company in Southern California.

In 1988, Mr. Obrand and his family moved to Telluride, Colorado where he fulfilled a life-long dream to live and practice law in the mountains. Mr. Obrand practiced general civil and criminal litigation concentrating on real estate (commercial and residential transactions, development and litigation), general business (transactions and litigation), family law, criminal and personal injury litigation.

Mr. Obrand tried several real estate, business and criminal cases to Colorado juries.

Although his practice in California and Colorado primarily focuses on real estate and business law and litigation, Mr. Obrand has defended several persons charged with crimes, including DUI, assault and battery, drug charges and, in Colorado, cases in which his clients were charged with violations of Colorado's Skier Safety Act while skiing at the Telluride Ski Resort.

While in Telluride, Colorado, Mr. Obrand also served for three years as a member of the San Miguel County Planning Commission. He also served for approximately one year as the Executive Director of the San Miguel Regional Housing Authority and Acting Director of the Telluride Housing Authority.

Presently, Mr. Obrand is engaged in the practice of law in Orange County, California where his practice focuses on general real estate and business law and litigation (including buyer-seller-broker disputes, contracts, land use and zoning matters, breach of contract, copyright infringement and trade secret litigation), and criminal litigation (DUI, misdemeanor and drug cases).

Mr. Obrand is admitted to practice before the state and federal courts of California and Colorado and to the United States Supreme Court.
